Panorama Park Tree Planting

Panorama Park Tree Planting

In 2010 Footprints Conservation Society set the goal of raising enough funds so that children in our community could take park in a tree-planting project at Panorama Park in Coquitlam, BC. Thanks to the success of our 2010 Planting The Seed Fundraising Gala, Footprints Conservation Society was able to donate $4000.00 towards this project. Thanks to the additional support from TD Friends of The Environment and the City Of Coquitlam Urban Forestry Division, this planting is currently underway and children at Panorama Heights Elementary and other surrounding elementary schools will be helping us plant over 5,000 trees in October 2011!

This is a great opportunity for children and residents to get outdoors to learn about nature and develop a sense of ownership and stewardship to their local environment while expand Coquitlam's urban forest, increasing biodiversity and “weeding out” invasive plants. This project will convert an area currently covered with non-native and invasive plants into a functional urban forest. It is an adaptive plan that will evolve over time to instill a sense of ownership and community stewardship for residents and visitors by emphasizing the importance of trees, forests and their associated values within urban environments.

This project will be implemented in two phases (spring and fall 2011). Project plans include planting over 5,000 native trees and shrubs, removing invasive plants, increasing biodiversity and improving habitat adjacent to Hoy Creek (a fish bearing stream and wildlife corridor).

FCS is also providing a program to participating Elementary Schools that educates children about the importance of this urban forestry project.

About Panorama Heights Elementary

Panorama Park is located at 1481 Johnson Street, Coquitlam BC and is closely situated to many elementary and middle schools including Panorama Heights Elementary School. The 3345-m2 site can accommodate over 1100 trees and approximately 4500 shrubs. Panorama Park was originally intended for planting two years ago, but was put on the backburner when funding for the site fell through. Given the size of the park, planting the entire site would cost over $30,000. Footprints Conservation Society’ s goal is to provide a minimum donation of $5,000 to allow for children in the elementary and middle schools that use this park an opportunity to plant forestry in Spring 2011.
